13 h 30 - 16 h 00
Walk the historical center of Maisons-Lafitte, small suburban town close to Saint Germain en laye. The city is especially well known for the chateau and the horse races.
The Château de Maisons was built in 1650. It is the best-preserved work by the famous architect François Mansart. It marks an architectural turning point between the end of the late Renaissance and the beginnings of classicism. It’s associated to various owners, most notably the Comte d’Artois (future Charles X), Napoléon’s Marshal Lannes and the banker Jacques Laffittte.
The reign of Louis XIV sees then end of the massive constructions inherited from the Middle Ages. For the first time, the focus of this chateau was on light. The Château de Maisons boasts large openings and a central vestibule with golden columns giving onto a grand winding staircase, a new technique at the time. It was a strong inspiration for the Chateaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Versailles.
