Napoleon Bonaparte’s expedition to Egypt in 1799 nourished fantasies about the Orient that had long existed in Western art and design. The first ever military campaign set up with scientists provided a tremendous improvement in their knowledge, but also interesting changes in architecture, still visible in today’s Paris, especially with fountains or buildings facades. The “Return from Egypt” style in design and furniture also shows the considerable influence of Egypt on French arts and crafts.
